It is the feminine imagery...

It is the feminine imagery in the language that leaps out at the reader. (v. 13) One thinks immediately of the lament of Jesus. (Luke 13:34) Language about God drawn in terms of motherhood is present in both the prophets and Jesus. One also thinks of the personification of the church as the elect lady in 2 John, suggestive of the mothering ministry of the church. The preacher might well elect to use such texts on Mother's Day and so rescue that day from banalities by exploring the powerful themes suggested by this feminine imagery.
