If you've ever had a family member or friend who is visually impaired or blind, it doesn't take long to become aware of how much sighted persons take for granted. Our reliance on eyesight can also limit our use of other senses: the majority of persons who rely on sight to help guide them often find that their other senses are not developed to their full potential. My father taught physics and astronomy classes at a community college for more than 30 years. During that time, he had many gifted students. One of the most outstanding students he ever had also happened to be blind.
