If you are predisposed to be a nonconformist, save this passage for the time when the Sunday after Christmas falls on December 26th, St. Stephen's Day. Stephen, the first martyr, was given the honor of being remembered on the day after the church celebrates the birth of Jesus. As we walk away from the manger, we stumble over the gravestone of Stephen. The framers of the church year showed great wisdom. After all, it's easier to contemplate the baby Jesus than to face the challenge of following the crucified and risen Lord. The memory of Stephen intruding into Christmastide, on December 26th, protects the 25th from getting lost in sentiment. If you are not so disposed, the fact that Stephen was a layman and a deacon should be suggestive for a challenging sermon. If used on the 26th, don't forget Good King Wenceslas and his carol.
