If I could just get a handle on it ...
I watched the children fish for prizes at the local carnival. The tub of water had several prize fish floating on the top while children with fishing poles tried to snag a small reward. Alongside one boy were others who had already won a prize urging him on as he said, "If I could just get a handle on it!"
Some men have a handle on the economic world and by those standards are very successful. Others have a handle on their emotions and are great peacemakers. Some have a handle on wisdom and are made a fool by no one.
But all of us would like to get a handle on the whole of life. This Epistle introduces us to men that have found that handle. They are our sideline encouragements as they advise us ... "the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." Eager to have us in the fellowship of his name, they warn us against all the pitfalls. The prize is there and has been from the beginning. it is simply waiting there for us to put our hooks into it, to grasp, and to celebrate with all the others the joy of receiving that which was promised.
