If a free society cannot...

"If a free society cannot help the many who are poor," said John F. Kennedy, "it cannot save the few who are rich" (N.Y. Times, 1/21/61). This places upon our Christian conscience a twofold responsibility: it urges those of us who have to "open our hand willingly" (v. 8) to meet the needs of the have nots and at the same time to minister to those whose poverty lies in the lack of what Shakespeare called "the milk of human kindness."
