An idealistic young man once asked a pastor how to achieve salvation. The pastor told
him to bicycle 25 miles a day, fast every Friday, bathe in olive oil monthly, and read the
Bible through every year. The young man tried this for two years. Then he went back to
the pastor. He complained, "I bicycled, fasted, bathed, and read through the Bible. When
I read the Bible the second time I realized I'm saved by faith alone. All that other stuff
wasn't necessary. Why didn't you just tell me?" The pastor responded, "Son, two years
ago you would never have believed me if I told you how simple it was!" Titus reminds
us, "... when the goodness and loving-kindness of God appeared, he saved us, not because
of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy...." Christmas
especially celebrates the free gift of God's grace given to us in Jesus Christ.
