The idea of readiness permeates our lives. In fact, we are almost paranoid in our efforts to be ready for what might come next. Homes everywhere, especially in urban areas, are outfitted with alarm systems and covenant signs to warn potential burglars that the occupants are on the alert for a break-in. During the last couple of years the entire nation became preoccupied with the notion of combat preparedness as troops set off for the Gulf.
