I was once speaking with an individual and during our conversation I asked him what he did for a living. To this question he replied, "I work in a steel mill." "Do you like it?" I asked him. "Let me put it this way," he said. "If they didn't pay me I wouldn't go." This left me with the impression that he wasn't thrilled with his job. Do you like your job? If not, what job would you like? In our text we meet a man called John the Baptist. How would you like his job? He was given the task of preparing people for the coming of the Messiah. How would you like that job? What would you do to get people to prepare their hearts to receive the Messiah? To this question one lady replied, "I would try to be open to the Holy Spirit; to allow God to use me. Left on my own, I couldn't do what John was called to do." Neither could John. He was simply an instrument in God's hands and he permitted God to use him. This is the key to how we can be useful in serving God -
