I was a little apprehensive. Justin, our daughter's 15-year-old friend, had offered to barbecue chicken for us. "What if we couldn't eat it?" I asked myself. But my daughter assured me that Justin cooked more frequently than his mom did.
The day of our barbecue, Justin arrived, with his secret recipe in his pocket. My daughter and he pushed me out of the kitchen. Before long Justin had the chicken marinating in a combination of olive oil, lemon, honey, garlic and rosemary. While the preparation continued Justin and our daughter set the table, (complete with fresh flowers from the garden), soaked the asparagus in ice water and measured the rice and water so that they were ready to be cooked. Later Justin lit the barbecue and waited until it was the right temperature. The chicken was then grilled until it was golden brown.
The meal was perfect. The only down side to the whole meal was that Justin wouldn't part with his secret recipe. However I wasn't really worried. "If Justin could make up a recipe like that," I reasoned, "so could I."
Since that day I have tried six times to recreate Justin's recipe. But no matter what I do, I can't make my marinade taste as good as the original.
