I was driving down a country road on a night so dark that my headlights barely seemed to pierce the gloom. Suddenly, rounding a corner, I faced another car whose driver had his high beams on. For a few crucial seconds I was blinded by the light, and veered off the road to land in a ditch. Luckily I was unhurt and soon able, with a bit of help, to get on the road again. Driving home it struck me that light in the darkness can be a welcome help or a dangerous hindrance, depending on the circumstances.
Light in the darkness can be blinding or revealing. Light can show up defects or brighten a dark corner. It all depends on the source and the direction of that light. When the light originated with me, it showed me the way I needed to go. When it was thrown into my eyes, it caused disaster.
When God's light came into the world in the Messiah, it brought light and peace to some, consternation and chaos to others. The only certain thing about that light is that to people walking in darkness, its power is indeed great. Lives upon whom that light shines are never the same again.
