I stood one afternoon several years ago watching the soft colors of a rainbow arch over an open field of grain. It was the first time I had seen one in that place, but I doubt it was the first time a rainbow had shown in that particular location. I can imagine when my forebears hacked their way across the region, the rainbow had shown for them some afternoon as now it shined for me. Their world was no better than our own, a mixture of good motives and the basest greed, moments of tenderness and deeds of stomach-wrenching violence. It was, like ours, a complex, troubled world.
