In As I Lay Dying...
Illustration
In As I Lay Dying by Faulkner, the main character Addie Bundren lies in bed awaiting death. Although her life has not afforded her much pleasure and she constantly sought (but never gained) control of her existence, she finally attempts to achieve this in death. Thus, to impose indelibly herself on the consciousness of those around her, she has her family make two promises. Both are evocative and are contrived by Faulkner as veiled attempts at a short-lived immortality for her and as a means of catapulting her family from the lethargy in which they live.
