"I just can't wait." Andrew's eyes were as big as saucers. He had seen his parents lug in the big box from the car and slip it into their bedroom closet. He was sure that the bike of his dreams was in it.
"But, you have to," his mother replied. "Your birthday isn't for three more weeks. Anyway, we have Thanksgiving to get ready for and that's always fun."
"It's not fair; I want it now! I already know what it is," Andrew said with the self-righteousness and self-centeredness of a nine-year-old boy. He did not mind not being surprised with his birthday gift. He did mind having to wait for it. He didn't think it was right.
"Patience." Dad's voice called out from the closet. "You know this closet is totally off-limits to you at all times," he added with his deepest, most resolved voice.
"How will I know that I will get it and you won't forget about it?" Andrew pressed on. It was a big walk-in closet and things could get lost way back in there, he imagined.
"Just as we remember to wake up every morning and fix your breakfast before school, be assured that we will remember and we'll celebrate your birthday at the right time, just like we have for the past eight years."
