I have always found this passage to be one of the most difficult in all the New Testament. Joseph Sittler has a good word for such passages, for they are in the life and work of every preacher: "Deal gently with some things in Scripture, and don't think you have to crack every obscure reference. It has taken 300 years to write a fairly accurate commentary on Shakespeare's language, and there are some facts that were part of the current history in Lancaster or York that are simply gone. We don't know what Shakespeare referred to. Why should we not think that Scripture, written much earlier, contains some passages that are, and probably will remain, unclear?"
