Huge architectural structures are meant to impress people. In the magnificent 35-acre
courts of the Jerusalem temple one of Jesus' students pipes up, "Ain't it grand!" Jesus
waves toward half-a-century's work on the finest building and ornamentation in the
world, "It will pass away."
We can't find our security in a building, in accurate predictions of when the world will end, in a nation, in nature, family, or our health. Jesus kicks all the props from under us. All these things that we treasure, trust, and live for will desert us. Jesus even proclaims in verse 16, "Some of you will be put to death." Yet, verse 18, "But not a hair of your head will perish." Let the world's great architecture crumble to gravel. Wait for the idols of family, nature, health, and nation to tumble face over in the dust, there's one place we're safe: in Christ.
