In his great novel, Babbitt, Sinclair Lewis' main character, George Babbitt, becomes a symbol of modern humanity's dilemma of freedom and necessity. After years living as a successful real estate broker in the Floral Heights vicinity of the town of Zenith, he regrettably discovers that his promethean impulse for creativity and freedom has been inadvertently bound by the polite proprieties of a suffocating middle class society.
