Here's an interesting question to ask a worship committee: "What one feeling or emotion would you want a worship service to stimulate within the worshiper?" During the Middle Ages, serenity was often regarded as the most sacred emotion. Other feelings have been identified with holiness by various Christian groups, such as contrition, compassion, awe, reverence, or love. The most frequently mentioned emotion in the New Testament is joy, and many churches today seek to instill that emotion within the congregation through lively music, upbeat prayers, and litanies of praise.
