In the heady days of the French Revolution, not only was royalty abolished, but any form of religion, including Christianity (not least the Sabbath Day). It was then discovered that the proletariat demanded some form of religious faith to fill the spiritual vacuum in their lives. One wag replied, "That's easy. All we have to do is find a man, crucify him, raise him from the dead on the third day and the people will be satisfied."
