Have you ever seen suits of armor in a museum? They are very impressive; shiny and lethal. But have you ever noticed how small they are? Not many of us modern folks could fit our hands into the small metal gloves the knights wore long ago. People were generally smaller in those days. Our feet could not comfortably fit in the metal shoes the knights wore.
