Harpers magazine once hired public relations and media people to put together a campaign for Jesus to announce his second coming. The memos suggested an overall program of interviews, talk shows, speeches, a Saturday Night Live appearance along with press releases reminiscent of a presidential candidate's campaign. One can easily detect how all of that would contradict the manner and style so characteristic of the Jesus of Nazareth whose public relations and performances brought him to the cross. Likewise, we can well surmise that the kind of reception that the best church bureaucrats would suggest for welcoming Jesus would be completely out of tune with what would be appropriate for what Jesus has a right to expect. Today the gospel suggests what we should look for when our Lord comes.
