Harold E. Kohn in his Pathways to Understanding showed that he was a keen observer of the natural world when he looked out his study window over Lake Charlevoix in Michigan.
He noticed that the sun takes its time in rising and setting. The ice on the lake melts when the temperature is just right. We can scream at or shake our fists at it, but nothing will change that rate of speed at which the ice melts.
