In Guy de Maupassant’s story “In the Moonlight,” the priest, Marignan, believes he understands God perfectly. Especially when he looks at nature he feels able to think God’s thoughts and decide why the world is as it is. He also hates women, fears their tenderness and believes God created them only to tempt men. One morning he’s informed that his niece who lives nearby has a boyfriend and meets him every evening beside the river. He’s enraged and decides to arrive this night at the river before the two lovers. Immediately as he steps outside he’s struck by the beauty of the moonlight.
