In the great reaches of...
Illustration
In the great reaches of the midwestern prairie of America, and in portions of our deserts, long, thin stretches of green spread across the land like ribbons. Often this greenery -- characterized by trees growing by streams of water -- can be seen by passengers in airplanes flying high above the earth. The green line snakes its way across the prairie and deserts, revealing the location of good water deep beneath the surface. Long after shallow-rooted plants succumb in times of drought, the trees continue to send out new roots and new leaves.
