God is in the redeeming business and the way of the Lord must be prepared. God is urging us to get our spiritual highways ready.
How can we do it?
We do it through our memories and expectations, through remembering and hope — but it doesn't stop there. The time has come to turn from simply remembering to an active hope. Just as
God made a new way for Israel in Isaiah's day, so God is still making a way for his people today. If we are abiding in Jesus Christ, then we are God's people.
We can, however, only perceive God's way with the eye of faith. It is this eye which the contemporary church most needs.
Look at our world today. Look at Beriut, Lebanon, Poland, El Salvador, and Afganistan. Look within the boundaries of this country and see the unemployed who really want to work and can't. Look at the prejudices which blind us from being who we are — one nation under God. See the injustice and the immorality within our own borders. There seems to be no road for humanity to take toward the Jerusalem of a brotherly and sisterly love and a just order.
If we let God be God, and we take seriously God's Word, then we will discover, even through the most unlikely circumstances, the way of the Lord is there.
Keep the eye of faith open and see the way the Lord is making now.
