Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides...
Illustration
Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides is about US Army Rangers and Philippine
guerillas raiding a Japanese POW camp in WWII. The Japanese army had already
executed POWs, so the US army, as it liberated the Philippines, had seen what the
retreating Japanese could do. The combined forces successfully approached Cabanatuan
camp (thirty miles behind enemy lines) in a surprise night attack, freeing 511 men. The
event was a shining success that lit up the United States with gratitude and pride.
