Gambling, once restricted to Nevada, Jersey City, racetracks, and back-room gaming
houses, has become a mainstream activity. Sporting events draw a huge following of
gamblers, with web sites, 24-hour hotlines, and daily newspapers dedicated to providing
odds and inside information for those inclined to gamble. Poker is one of the fastest
growing "sports," and is often advertised as a glamorous game that will make one
rich.
Along with the rise of gambling has come an addiction to gambling, financial ruin, and marital strife. Researchers say that gambling addiction is highest among men, people of lower socioeconomic status, and ethnic groups.
The soldiers at the foot of Jesus' cross were gamblers, too. They might feel very much at home in the gambling-obsessed twenty-first century.
