Fundraisers tell us there is no way to receive a gift if we don't ask. Persistence can help. The wealthy New York financier, J. P. Morgan, was known to be busy and hard to pin down. The trustees of an Ivy League school finally succeeded in getting him to visit the campus and listen to their pitch for possibly funding one of the proposed buildings in their new medical school complex. Morgan asked to see the plans for the expanded campus. Studying it briefly, he jabbed his finger at the drawings, saying, "I'll give that, that, and that," and then he was out the door, hurrying off to another appointment before he could even be thanked.
