A friend of mine told me about the most special piece of furniture in his house. When I asked him to describe it, he told me about a bedside table that seemed like the most ordinary table in the world. "What makes that bedside table so special?" I asked. It certainly wasn't the design, or the wood, or the stains on the wood. It could not have been the lamp, or the drawer, or the clutter of magazines on the bottom shelf. "I'll tell you what is so special about this table," he said.
