A friend and his wife...
Illustration
A friend and his wife are both over fifty years of age. They've been married over thirty
years. They've raised three children and are respectable members of society. But when
her mother is coming for a visit, the wife goes on a cleaning frenzy around the house
(and, of course, expects my friend to join in wholeheartedly). My friend has suggested to
his wife that the reason for the visit is not to bring out the white gloves and make sure
everything is perfectly clean, but to enjoy time together. Still, she says, "I want the house
to look just right ... she's my mother!"
Is that how Martha felt? "The Master is coming ... I want the house and meal to be just right...." But Jesus said, "... only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her."
