Four-year-old Luke had taken a whole bottle of vitamins. They were his mom's vitamins and so contained extra iron. Iron can be wonderful in small doses but in large doses, especially for children, it is toxic. It can even kill.
The emergency squad was doing what they could as they rushed him to the hospital, but they needed a doctor and equipment that the ambulance didn't carry. All they could do was keep his heart beating and get oxygen into his little lungs.
At the hospital the doctors worked furiously. Twice his little heart stopped beating and a flat line traced itself across the monitor screen. Twice the doctors increased the current on the paddles and jolted his heart back to life. His mother and sisters watched through the closed door windows looking into the ER trauma room. All they could do was pray.
Finally the doctors were able to ease up a little. His heart was beating on its own. His day would come some day, but not today. Luke had a new lease on life and days ahead before death would get another chance at him.
