Four-year-old Heather had never answered the phone before. She had seen her parents and older brother do it but had never even had an occasion to give it a try. But now the phone was ringing and no one was coming to answer it. After about the fifth ring, she got up her courage and picked up the phone. However, the excitement of doing something new and different made it impossible for her to interpret what the noise coming through the phone meant. So, after a few seconds, she sheepishly returned the phone to its resting place without even uttering a sound herself.
