Following World War II, thanks in great measure to the Marshall Plan, West Germany turned speedily to the rebuilding of its cities and within a relatively short time, they were again attractive and thriving. East Germany, however, was slow in recovering, and for some years their cities were scarred by the rubble of buildings bombed during the war. They were dispirited, both by the humiliation of losing the war, and the new alien government imposed upon them.
