In the flat prairie lands...
Illustration
In the flat prairie lands of Kansas there used to be a highway that continued for miles without a single curve. And then, unexpectedly, there was an arrow sign for a sharp curve, with a posted speed of twenty miles per hour. Sure enough, though there were no hills or valleys, the highway made a ninety-degree bend to the left, followed in a short distance by two equally sharp turns to the right, and finally a ninety-degree turn back left. Evidently, the highway department had been unable to buy someone's field, and the highway was left to follow a circuitous route around the obstacle.
