The five-year-old boy...
Illustration
The five-year-old boy, wearing a miniature hard hat and looking pensive, knelt over his project. In front of him was a patch of brown, barren ground. To his left and right were trusted tools of the trade: Tonka toys, shovels, and green plastic buckets. He had an impressive array of implements for breaking ground. Orange safety cones stationed around his work area prompted a passerby to inquire: "What are you doing?" The five-
year-old looked up sternly and said resolutely in one word, "Work!" She chuckled and nodded in agreement, saying, "That's exactly what a five-year-old should be doing." It seemed to her amusing and proper at the same time. The work this boy was doing was obviously a mission he believed in unashamedly. The strange, yet certain, work of a Christian is to risk everything on the unseen. Our calling, odd as it is to those around us, is wholehearted belief -- faith in the One that God has sent.
