Few Sunday school children haven't heard about the "wee little guy" Zacchaeus, with
whom Jesus had "tea." Adults familiar with the story think it's neat to imagine that Jesus
would pick them out of a crowd like a contestant on The Price is Right and want
to have dinner with them.
Before our dreams get too far ahead of us, we must ponder a couple of things about Zacchaeus. He went to considerable effort to see Jesus. An adult, even in the first century, probably looked a little strange scrambling up a tree like a ten-year-old. How badly do you want to be in the Lord's presence?
Second, once Zacchaeus recognized what parts of his character needed reforming, he wasted no time changing them. He told Jesus, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor." Are you ready for the Lord to visit your place and to transform your life?
