Few people have been celebrated for their intellect and wisdom as much as Sir Isaac Newton. Newton is credited with so many of the advances in understanding that fueled the Enlightenment. He formulated the laws of universal gravitation and motion so essential to physics. Newton also developed the first reflecting telescope and pioneered the mathematics we now know as calculus. He was surrounded by a great deal of adoration for his acumen. In a letter dated February 5, 1675 written to his friend, Robert Hooke, Newton offered some sense of his own understanding of his achievement.
