A favorite children's game is Red Light, Green Light. When the leader turns away and yells, "Green light!" the children can all begin to creep toward the leader. When the leader whirls around and yells, "Red light!" anybody caught in motion must return to the beginning. The goal is to travel a good distance while the light is green, and perhaps even take a step before the leader's eyes focus when it is red. Adults play this game at traffic lights. When we see the light is green we hurry a bit to make it through. If it is yellow, we really step on the accelerator. Every once in a while, we find ourselves sneaking through as the light turns red. One rush hour morning, traffic was backed up for several blocks from one major intersection. I assumed that there had been an accident or breakdown to slow the traffic so much. When I arrived at the intersection I discovered the source of the slowdown. A police car was sitting at the intersection, and people were abiding by the rules of the light. No one was sneaking through on yellow with a police officer watching. We were living by the light!
