With the exception of a falling sensation many child development scholars believe all fears are learned as life progresses. Such things as fearing crossing carelessly in front of an automobile or touching a hot stove are helpful fears for our protection, however generalized or neurotic fear or anxiety often must be unlearned to set one free for living. As FDR noted, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." As President during the Depression he saw that fear begets fear and thus can immobilize a nation.
