Everyone has a way of marking ownership. Coins bear the image of the reigning monarch (Queen Elizabeth II for British Commonwealth countries), or in the case of democratic countries, symbols and important figures of the country (George Washington, the eagle, government buildings, and the like). Book owners, too, use stamps or bookplates (ex libris) to identify ownership. With the invention of Gutenberg's printing press and the resulting proliferation of books, marking ownership became important. The first printed bookplate originated in Germany and was designed by Albrecht Dürer in 1516. Most early bookplates were armorial in nature reflecting a time in which heraldry was an essential component of society. The Brandenburg bookplate of 1470 was a simple woodcut of an angel holding a shield with the arms of the Brandenburg family.
Over time, bookplates have depicted flowers, ornaments, or stylized names. Famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Diego Rivera at one time or another designed bookplates for patrons. Five-year-old Helen Page, whose mother was a bookplate artist, designed one of the most endearing bookplates. Tired of waiting for her mother to design a bookplate for her, Helen drew a stick figure of herself, with the words, "A. Helen Page" over the picture and the words "Her Book 1899" underneath.
Bookplates, coins with images ... all are used to mark ownership. God simply stamped the divine image on each one of us to mark his claim.
