Even the behavior of a common thief can illustrate the unexpected generosity with which God gifts us.
Jesse James, the notorious bank robber, once ended up, along with the rest of his thieving gang, at the front door of a lonely farmhouse. They were looking for food and a place to rest. The woman living there gave them what food she could and apologized for the poor hospitality. She explained that she was a widow, deeply in debt, waiting for the debt collector to arrive. He was coming to demand that she hand over $1,400, a sum she could not possibly pay.
James had the spoils of one of his bank raids with him. He gave the astonished woman enough money to pay off her debt, telling her to be sure to get a receipt from the debt collector. Then he and his gang withdrew to watch the road leading to the farmhouse. Along came the debt collector, looking determined. A short while later he emerged from the farmhouse, looking pleased with himself. The James gang intercepted him on the road, recovered their $1,400, and rode away.
