Eugene Peterson, in his book...
Eugene Peterson, in his book Reversed Thunder, makes a fascinating distinction between a lamp and a lamp-stand in the book of Revelation. He begins by saying that churches are not Victorian parlors where everything is always neat and tidy. In fact, churches in the New Testament as well as today are more like messy family rooms. Things are out of order; the whole place has a sense of being lived in. They are not show rooms but living rooms. Since God calls sinners into the life of the church, individual churches are always going to be imperfect and an affront to the upright.
