The English mathematician and physicist Isaac Newton was one of the great minds of history. Newton's work profoundly influenced the course of scientific development over the whole of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He invented calculus, the mathematical tool indispensable for the handling of the complexities of the physical universe. He discovered the three laws of motion which remain the basis of ordinary physics. He is perhaps best remembered for the story of the apple's fall which led him to the development of the law of universal gravitation.
