Elijah is in despair, a tired prophet who voices the desire to die. His agony is one of the few biblical stories about thoughts of suicide and despair.
The Broadway musical, Annie features a song of courage and hope in the face of despair. It is called "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow." The song rings out against all the barriers which might be set against survival and victory.
Where do we find what we need to go on, when it seems so impossible? Where is refreshment, the light of hope for our journey, when the way seems blocked?
An old Latin word still used occasionally today is viaticurn. In ancient Rome it referred to the provisions necessary for an important person to take a long journey. As Christians we have also been given viaticum, the Lord's meal of bread and wine to strengthen us, to give us the refreshment we need to find peace and home.
