Early in December, Jack found himself feeling low. He felt despair but was not able to pinpoint the cause. It had been a difficult year with not much going his way. He did not feel much like celebrating the birth of our Savior.
His CD player in his car broke, forcing him to listen to the radio. One day on his way to work, he heard what he thought at first was a commercial, but later discovered that it was a program. The speaker was talking about finding hope in the world. "Look for hope in little things," the speaker said. People called in to the radio station to give examples of finding hope in the midst of their everyday lives. Jack listened intently as one caller told of a boy in her neighborhood who rescued some ducks that had wandered off. Another called told of an employee at the local discount store who volunteers on the weekends to perform magic shows at nursing homes. Another caller told of a bus driver who greets every rider with a smile and a warm "Hello." Several more people called to share ways they found hope.
Jack began to look in the everydayness of his life for signs of hope. When he arrived at work, he found a Christmas card from one of his coworkers. The front of the card was an artistic rendering of the Nativity scene -- inside were words of hope. "At a time when people were filled with despair, God sent Jesus into our world." Looking at that card and reading those words changed Jack's outlook. He no longer felt defeated but was filled with new hope. He continues to look for evidence of hope in our world.
