Earlier in the evening, Ginny had been almost overwhelmed by the sky's splendor as the sun slowly dropped below the horizon. Now, watching the ten o'clock news, she learned that the sunset's magnificence was a result of impurities in the upper atmosphere. The irony of that struck her immediately: such incredible beauty caused by "impurities." But nature was like that, she realized. Take pearls, for instance. They are formed by oysters around impurities. Or take the Grand Canyon -- not an "impurity" exactly, but certainly the ultimate case of erosion.
