During the turbulent 1960s, at the height of the segregation storm, the parents of a first-grader sent her off for her first day at a newly integrated school. When the school day was over, the mother met the youngster at the door with the car. "How did everything go, sweetheart?" she inquired.
"Oh, mother! You know what? A little black girl sat next to me!" the girl said.
Her mother sensing that this might mark a traumatic experience, quickly asked, "And what happened?"
"We were both so scared," explained the child, "that we held hands all day long."
