During the Great Depression, ministers often proclaimed the Word at great personal sacrifice. One minister I know told me about an experience he had filling in at a vacant congregation in the plains of eastern Colorado. He left early in the morning while it was still dark and drove several hours over gravel roads in his Model T Ford to arrive at this small country church in time for service. The small group that gathered that Sunday morning was very appreciative for his message. For his trouble he was given a chicken, a live chicken tied to a string. It was all they could afford.
