During 1995, we marked the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. And although there were many ceremonies in honor of that event, not all of them were joyful, because part of what was involved was remembering what the Allied troops found when they arrived in places like Dachau and Auschwitz. Throughout the war, there had been reports of atrocities taking place against the Jews. But that was not an issue for the majority of Americans, since most Americans were not Jewish and what was taking place was so far away. Finally, in recent years, more and more people have come forward to admit that they knew what was going on in Germany, but at the time they simply chose not to get involved. Even the Roman Catholic Church has acknowledged that it failed to do what it could have done to prevent the Holocaust from taking place. Paul commands us to show our love and to wake from the sleep that holds us back from doing what we ought to do. -- Bowen
