During the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the city of Sarajevo came under siege by the Bosnian Serbs. Access to the capital was blocked on three sides. On the fourth side was the airport. The United Nations agreed not to let people cross the airport, in exchange for letting flights land. As a result, the Bosnian government army built a tunnel under the runway in 1993. Through that tunnel came food and weapons and the evacuation of many people. The tunnel became known as the "Tunnel of Hope." This dark passageway to the city brought hope.
