In the dry and desolate...
Illustration
In the dry and desolate region alongside the Dead Sea -- a place of rock and salt and dust -- one comes abruptly to the spring of En Gedi. This cascading water creates an oasis of green in the midst of a dry and thirsty land. Only a desert dweller can fully appreciate what Jesus meant when he said he was living water. Only a desert dweller can fully grasp the life-saving implications of the invitation to come and drink. No stagnant pool, Jesus is not just water, but living, flowing, cascading water in a dry and desolate environment. When I am most depressed, when life and joy have dried up around me, when I thirst with a great thirst of the spirit, only his living water can bring me life.
